小泉八雲終焉の地碑

　小泉八雲終焉の地
小泉八雲（ラフカディオ・ハーン）は嘉永3年（1850）ギリシアのレフカダ島に生れた。明治23年（1890）アメリカの新聞記者として来日、その後記者をやめ小泉セツと結婚　松江・熊本で教鞭をとった。
明治29年（1896）日本に帰化し、以来東京帝国大学、早稲田大学で英文学を講じながら「怪談」等幾多の英文による名作を執筆した。
明治35年（1902）市谷富久町からこの地大久保に居を移した。
明治37年（1904）9月26日妻子の身を案じ、自分の仕事を気にしながら「ああ　病気のため・・・」の悲愴な一語を残し、帰らぬ人となった時に54歳であった。
伝統的な日本文化を広く欧米に紹介した彼の功労に対し、大正4年（1915）日本政府は従四位を追贈した。我が国の自然と文化をこよなく愛し、その真の姿を伝えた功績は偉大であり、高く評価されている。

          The Place Where Yakumo Koizmi Died
 Yakumo Koizumi(Lafcadio Hearn) was born in 1850 in Lefkadalsle,Greece.He came to Japan in1890 as a correspondent for the American Press.He later resigned from his job and married Setsu Koizumi,and taught in Matsue and Kumamoto.
 In 1896,he was naturalized as a Japanese citizen.He wrote several masterpieces in English,for example,"Kwaidan".During this time he taught Englesh literature in Tokyo Imperial University (the University of Tokyo) and Waseda University.
 He moved from Ixhigaya Tomihisa-cho to Okubo in 1902.
 He left this world on September 26 1904 at the age of 54 amidst worries about his wife,children and work,with the touching words "Ah,the sickness・・・".
 For his efforts in introducing traditiona Japanese culture,the Japanese Government admited him posthumously to the rank of "Jushii(Fourth Grade,Junior of the Court rank)" in 1915.
 His great love for the natureand culture of our country and hisefforts in introducing their true aspect is valued highly.
